Tajinderpal Singh Toor, an Indian shot putter, has had a stellar career. He is the current Asian record holder, an Olympian, a two-time Asian champion, a four-time national winner, and a gold medalist from the Asian Games.

In 2021, at the fourth Indian Grand Prix, Tajinderpal Singh Toor set a new men’s shot put national record by qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics with a throw of 21.49 metres. The Saudi Arabian Sultan Abdulmajeed Al-Hebshi’s 21.13m Asian record was broken with the 21.49 throw as well. Since then, the Punjabi athlete has improved the mark, reaching 21.77m at the national competition in 2023 in Bhubaneswar.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor, who was born and raised in a farming family in the Punjabi village of Khosa Pando on November 13, 1994, inherited his father Karam Singh’s and uncle Gurdev Singh’s passion for sports. Although Tajinderpal’s uncle Gurdev Singh, an international shot put medalist, had a significant impact on him as a youngster, Karam Singh was well-known in his village and the surrounding areas for the popular tug-of-war competitions.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor received instruction from Gurdev Singh throughout his early years, and his talent quickly became apparent. The young shot putter won titles at the state level in the youth division and consistently outperformed opponents from other states.

Tajinderpal entered the national conversation when he won the Federation Cup shot put championship in 2016 and successfully defended it in 2017 with a throw of 20.40 metres. At the Almaty Kosanov Memorial in Kazakhstan in June 2017, the Indian shot putter won his first international championship. A month later, he took silver with a throw of 19.77m at the Asian championships, just three centimetres behind gold-medal winner Ali Samari of Iran.

Then, in 2018, Tajinderpal Singh Toor won a third straight Federation Cup championship. Although it was an excellent warm-up for his first Commonwealth Games appearance in 2018 at Gold Coast, he could only manage to finish eighth. Tajinderpal learned the heartbreaking news that his father had passed away from cancer the day he returned home. It simply encouraged him to pursue his greatest desire of competing in the Olympics.

In 2015, Tajinderpal joined the Indian Navy and he’s currently serving as Acting Petty Officer.
