The upcoming competition is set to take place exactly one year before the surfing competition at Paris 2024 next year.

The competition will feature thirty-four of the world’s best surfers, competing for several Olympic quotas amidst a nine-foot wave.
2023 Tahiti Pro Teahupo’o competition preview
So far, three of the men’s slots have already been booked. Defending champion Filipe Toledo, Australia’s Ethan Ewing and USA’s Griffin Colapinto have earning the three spots. They all earned it during the previous Champoomship Tour stop in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa back in July. Toledo won two of the last three stops currently leads the rankings with 54,980 points.
Meanwhile, his other three teammates are closely stacked on points in the rankings. Joao Chianca, Yago Dora and three-time WSL champion Gabriel Medina are all in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Behind them are Australia’s Jack Robinson, Ryan Callinan and Connor O’Leary. Italy’s Leonardo Fioravanti who already has a ticket to Paris 2024 could also finish in the final five. He is currently ranked at ninth in the rankings.
On the other hand, only one spot remains in the girl’s category. The final five set to compete in California will compete for the final spot. USA’s Carissa Moore and Australia’s Tyler Wright have already secured their spots while fellow compatriots Caroline Marks and Molly Picklum have also joined them. The top contenders for the final spot are USA’s Lakey Peterson, and Caitlin Simmers, Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore and Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb.

The Tahiti Pro Teahupo’o which is the last event on the WSL Championship Tour will take place at the infamous Teahupo’o wave. This is the same venue set to host the surfing competition at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The upcoming competition will also decide the final five male and female surfers who will compete in the Rip Curl WSL Finals. The finals are set to take place at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, California from 8 to 16 September.

The Tahiti Pro competition is scheduled to take place from August 11 to 20. The events schedule will change depending on weather and wave conditions.
2023 Tahiti Pro Teahupo’o competition format and Olympic qualification spots
The 2023 Tahiti Pro Teahupo’o competition will begin with three athletes facing off in the opening round. The winners of this round will then advance directly to the Round of 16. Meanwhile, the other two surfers will compete from the elimination round. From there, two athletes will be paired against one another in the following rounds.
The winner of each round will move on through the bracket until the final round. The competition will also decide the remaining quotas for the upcoming Olympic Games. So far, 18 spots, 10 for men and eight for women, have been decided through the 2023 Championship Tour.
