Kidambi Srikanth faced a significant defeat in the opening round of the 2023 Syed Modi India International, losing to Chia Hao Lee. The former silver medalist at the World Championships was eliminated from the competition in straight games. Although the initial game was closely contested, with Srikanth conceding a 21-23 lead, Chia dominated the second game with a 21-8 score, securing victory in 38 minutes.
In contrast, 16-year-old Unnati Hooda demonstrated impressive resilience by overcoming seasoned player Aakarshi Kashyap in a thrilling 77-minute encounter. Hooda, a rising star in women’s singles, staged a comeback after dropping the opener 15-21. Displaying remarkable fighting spirit, she secured victory in the next two games with scores of 21-19 and 21-18, earning her a spot in the Round of 16 in this Super 300 tournament.
Meanwhile, Indian shuttlers Priyanshu Rajawat, Kiran George, and Sathish Kumar Karunakaran successfully advanced to the men’s singles last 16. Priyanshu secured victory over Dmitriy Panarin with a score of 21-17, 21-19, Kiran triumphed over Chirag Sen with a score-line of 21-16, 14-21, 21-13, & Sathish defeated Huang Yu Kai with scores of 21-8, 21-13. As per sources, the 2023 Syed Modi International will grant $15,750 to the champions in the singles category. Similarly, each winning pair of the doubles category will bag $16590. The singles category runners-up are set to receive a prize of $7,980. Regrettably, participants exiting the competition after the first round will not be eligible for any prize money.
