One of the first black Americans to sign an NBA contract serves as the central character in the film.
Portis will play the part of Earl Lloyd, while Everett Osborne will be featured as Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton. Nat Clifton was the first African American to sign an NBA contract in the fall of 1950, according to Portis’ business manager, Patrick Frazier.
According to Frazer, despite having fewer dialogue-based lines in the movie, Portis plays a part in a pivotal scene in which the first African American basketball players in the NBA are holding a press conference and “talking about their experience and what they’re going through.”
