The front-runners and odds to take over as Sutton United next new manager have been announced following their 8-0 loss against Stockport, which resulted in Matt Gray’s dismissal
With 14 points from 21 games played, no league victory in five, and six points from safety, the outcome leaves them at the bottom of the League Two standings. Sutton appointed Gray in 2019, and in 2021, he led them to their first-ever Football League appearance.

Since then, Sutton has announced that Jason Goodliffe, the assistant manager, will be responsible for the first team’s practises this week. This is in anticipation of Saturday’s home match against Mansfield, who are now in fourth place and hoping to move up into the top three.
After defeating Notts County 5-1 to start the 2023–24 season, Sutton lost their next seven league games and didn’t win in the league again until October. Even though they have only won once in the league since, they have managed to advance to the FA Cup’s third round, where they will play Championship team Plymouth, who also lack a manager after Steven Schumacher left for Stoke this week.

County 8-0 Sutton United
The Hatters made a spectacular comeback to League Two play at Edgeley Park, defeating Sutton. County started their quest to concentrate on the League with a vengeance after losing two knockout competitions in the span of a week—at Wigan and, most recently, against Aldershot. They found the net four times per half and kept a six-point lead at the top of the table.
Together with goals from Kyle Wootton, Joel Cotterill, Tanto Olaofe, a former Sutton loanee, and Ryan Croasdale, captain Paddy Madden scored his second hat-trick of the season in all competitions. It was the Hatters’ largest winning margin since their historic 13-0 thrashing of Halifax just under 90 years ago, and it was their first eight-goal haul in a competitive game in 67 years.
