The femoral artery is a vessel that supplies oxygenated blood to the anterior abdominal wall and the lower extremity tissue, according to Physiopedia. It is an anterior part of the thigh, there is something called a femoral triangle that is present next to a vein and nerve.
Below the level of the inguinal ligament, the external iliac artery continues to form as the femoral artery. It typically measures 4 cm long and sits in anterior of the femoral head. Height, weight, sex, and ethnicity are all factors that affect both the length and the diameter.
The popliteal artery is where the femoral artery ends after continuing as the superficial femoral artery. In the thigh, the deep femoral artery then comes to an end as perforating arteries. The superficial epigastric artery, superficial circumflex artery, and external pudendal artery are some of the other branches that originate from the common femoral artery.
Blood with oxygen is delivered to the lower leg in part by the superficial femoral artery. It has clinical significance since it is a location of complications from peripheral arterial disease, causing claudication symptoms to flare up occasionally in the thigh and calf and serving as an entry point for various endovascular procedures.
