Justice Hemant Gupta was born to his father Jitender Vir Gupta and his mother Bimla Gupta. Hemant’s father was also a Judge. Justice Hemant has given numerous verdicts to date and now he is all set to retire in 2022 on the 16th of October.

Justice Hemant Gupta Professional Career
Justice Hemant Gupta enrolled as an advocate in July of 1980 and started practice in the District Court based in Chandigarh, India. He entered in the High Court of Punjab and Haryana and worked on Civil, Labour, Company, and Constitutional matters.
In the year 1997 Gupta was appointed as the Additional Advocate General of Punjab and elevated as a Judge of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana on 2nd of July in the year 2002. Justice Hemant Gupta was, later on, transferred to the Patna High Court in February of the year 2016, thereafter he took over the charge of acting chief justice of the Patna High Court after the retirement of Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari on 29th of October in the same year 2016.
He was appointed the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on 18th of March in 2017. In November of 2018 he became a Justice of the Supreme Court of India.
It was reported that, “Students want their freedom of choice of dress to be regulated by religion”, Hemant Gupta stated upholding hijab ban in Karnataka schools. Justice Hemant Gupta ruled in favor of the ban on hijab in educational institutions having prescribed dress codes, and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia ruled in favor of the pro-hijab petitioners.
