The Supercopa de Espana (Spanish Super Cup) semifinal will pit Real Madrid against Atletico Madrid, a rival team in the same city, on Wednesday, January 10. There are now 4 teams in the competition, including the La Liga and Copa Del Rey champions and runners-up.
Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Osasuna, and Atletico Madrid are the four teams competing in this year’s Super Cup. The Spanish Super Cup, often known as the Supercopa de España, is a top football competition in Spain.
The Copa del Rey and La Liga champions and runners-up have competed in the current edition of the competition, which was initially established in 1982 as a two-team event.
The tournament is often held outside Spain. During the 2019–20 season, the Spanish Federation made the decision to relocate the trophy to the Middle East in order to draw attention from around the world and receive funding from the Saudi Arabian government. The Spanish Federation aimed to profit from Saudi Arabia’s remarkable rise in popularity in sports, which included the recruitment of famous players to their league and the awarding of the hosting rights for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Barcelona is the current champion, having captured a record-extending 14 titles in 2023. Real Madrid are the second most successful team with 12 titles followed by Athletic Bilbao and Deportivo La Coruña’s three.
