The Lombardi trophy has been around since Super Bowl 1 back in 1967 and is named after Vince Lombardi, widely considered as one of the greatest football coaches of all time.
Cost of making the Lombardi Trophy
Interestingly, the Lombardi trophy costs more to make than the actual value of the trophy itself. The Lombardi trophy costs around $50,000 to make, while the physical trophy itself is valued at around $10,000.
Lombardi Trophy manufacturers
Every year, the Lombardi Trophy is manufactured by Tiffany & Co., for the NFL Super Bowl. Tiffany and co. are a luxury jewelry company that is based in New York City. The company has been responsible for creating the trophy every year, ever since the first Super Bowl.
The company’s vice president Oscar Riedener sketched out the original design for the trophy back in 1966 on a napkin for NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle. The trophy wasn’t initially named as the Lombardi trophy, but got named that way only in 1970.
Lombardi Trophy manufacturing process and materials
The NFL Super Bowl’s Lombardi Trophy is made out of sterling silver, with the manufacturing process usually taking four months. According to the manufacturers Tiffany & Co., the trophy is created in a workshop based in Cumberland, Rhode Island. Although it used to be originally made in New Jersey, the company shifted the location in 2017.
The manufacturers create the trophy, by heating sterling silver to 1,000 degrees before molding it into shape. Every year, they make a new unlike the NHL’s Stanley Cup. As such, each team gets to keep their own version of the Lombardi Trophy.
Lombardi Trophy size measurements
The Lombardi Trophy measures about 20.75 inches high and weighs around seven pounds. The football featured on top of the trophy measures the same size as a regulation NFL football. The weight however, is much higher since the trophy is made out of sterling silver.
