For any professional athlete, the Vince Lombardi Trophy is one of the most sought-after cups in the world. For many years, the NFL championship team has received this elegant yet basic trophy.

Its design consists of a square, obelisk-shaped base with a regulation-sized football on top. The words “Vince Lombardi Trophy” and the NFL shield, as well as the number of the Super Bowl it honours, are inscribed on the front.

When NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle requested Tiffany & Co., a renowned jewellery manufacturer, to create a new trophy for the league victors in the new Super Bowl era in 1966, the design was born. Oscar Riedner, vice president of Tiffany & Co., was assigned to create the award despite his lack of knowledge of the sport.

He made the decision to get a football from FAO Schwarz in order to get some inspiration. He broke apart the cereal box, created a stand, and set the ball in kicking position on top of it the following morning while he was having a bowl of corn pops. Riedner eventually presented the League with a considerably more completed sketch that he had drawn during a meal with Rozelle.

The Vince Lombardi Trophy is a very opulent piece that weighs 107.3 ounces, is 22.75 inches tall, and is crafted from sterling silver. It is thought to be worth more than $10,000.

Vince Lombardi Trophy’s history

The first Super Bowl trophy was given out nearly a century later, in 1967, when the Green Bay Packers, under the great coach Vince Lombardi, defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I, despite the fact that football had been played in the United States since 1869. The heyday of Lombardi’s Packers and quarterback Bart Starr came to an end when the Packers accomplished the same thing the following season against the Oakland Raiders.

The trophy was known as the “World Professional Football Championship Trophy” at the time, but the new NFL chose to honour the legendary coach, who passed away from cancer in late 1970 at the age of 57, by naming it after the team that won the Super Bowl and became the first two-time champion of the new era.

As a result, the Baltimore Colts officially received the Lombardi Trophy for the first time following their victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V.

For example, in Super Bowl LVIII, each player on the winning team received $164,000, which came from the coffers of the Kansas City Chiefs owners and since Super Bowl XXV, the MVP has been awarded the Pete Rozelle Trophy, named after former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle.
