With her distinctive brand of sympathetic gay comedy, comedian Sunny Laprade has developed a sizable fan base on TikTok. She has garnered over 230,000 followers and 13 million likes.
Laprade is a transgender woman, and much of her content tackles the trans experience. It includes health updates to humorous observations about what life is like for transgender individuals in the current world.
The video-sharing website has received quite a bit of attention after Laprade addressed the rather contentious subject of deadnaming in her latest video.
Sunny Laprade Issues Pleed To Disclose
As she sat down to speak to her viewers directly, Laprade started her most recent TikTok by telling her followers about a fairly awful deadnaming incident. She said, “Well, it finally happened. In my TikTok comments, someone mistakenly guessed my deadname was a joke.”
Laprade went on to say that whenever she makes a deadname reference, people in her comment section would jokingly try to guess what it is and frequently use “wacky and odd names” for comedy effect.
The problem, though, is that Laprade believes her real deadname is really “wacky and unorthodox,” and as a result, a TikTok user accidentally revealed Laprade’s real deadname while trying to be amusing.
The comic then went on to tell her audience that she desired they would never use her deadname, but if they were to playfully guess it, she begged that they double-check it on Google first so that they wouldn’t make the mistake of actually revealing it. What Is A Deadname?
If a person later changes their name, their birth name is still considered to be their “deadname” in this context. In the LGBTQIA+ community, where it is typically used to refer to the name a transgender person used before they underwent gender transition, the phrase “deadname” has gained more significance in recent years.
Many transgender people who go through a name change do so because they believe it better represents their trans identity than the name they were given at birth. When a transitioned person’s deadname is used without their permission, it is referred to as the act of deadnaming. Laprade has previously called cisgender people out for using the term “deadnaming”
The comedian whose age is not known also said that a user actually accidentally guessed her dead name.
“So, if you feel the need to try and guess my deadname as a joke in my TikTok comments, WHICH YOU SHOULDN’T DO, but if you have to, if you absolutely have to, at the very least google search to make sure you don’t accidentally get it right!”
What Makes Deadnaming Viewed As Offensive?
Deadnaming is insulting, according to The List, because it “may be invalidating and can make the gender transitioning process tougher.”
Furthermore, according to Medical News Today, changing one’s name frequently involves societal and legal obstacles, and referring to a person by their deadname rather than their desired title only creates new ones.
Deadnaming can happen accidentally—for instance, if a loved one has known someone for a long time, they might mistakenly use the person’s deadname—or it can be more malignant if done on purpose to disqualify an LGBT person.
