Sunny Edwards vs Felix Alvarado Match Events & How it Unfolded?
Edwards started off on the back foot and boxed well, enticing Alvarado into his traps and skillfully laying the groundwork for his combinations. During the first three rounds, Edwards kept Alvarado on his heels by circling him, displaying incredible footwork, and landing powerful combinations from all directions. Later in the fourth round, Alvarado briefly held Edwards against the ropes and threw an unsuccessful barrage of blows that managed to briefly put Edwards on the defensive. However, Edwards counterpunched well of his own, including a number of rocking uppercuts.
In the sixth round, Edwards upped his game even more, hitting several clean strokes that briefly bewildered Alvarado. After sensing urgency, Alvarado went all out in seventh round, committing to longer shots from a distance and chasing Edwards across the ring while landing some powerful strikes. In the eighth round, Alvarado had another standout moment when he appeared to knock Edwards down but the referee called it a slip even though Edwards did appear to be harmed. Encouraged, Alvarado exploded in the ninth round, trying to turn the fight into a brawl as both fighters began to exhibit signs of wear and tear from the intensely physical contest.
As 10th round began, Edwards made the decision to stay on the ropes and attempted to push Alvarado away from there. He accomplished that in the first moments of the round, but later in the round, he suffered some major body damage. To secure his well-deserved victory, Edwards stuck to his initial strategy of maneuvering around Alvarado and counterpunching with razor-sharp accuracy in the final two rounds. Ultimately, Edwards retained his IBF title via unanimous decision as judges scored the fight 115-113, 115-113, 116-112.
