The upcoming tournament will take place starting from 27th October to 4th November in Johor, Malaysia.
Sultan of Johor Cup 2023 teams and pools
The tournament is the 11th edition of the competition and it will feature 8 participating teams. This year marks the first edition of the competition to feature 8 teams as all the previous editions consisted of only 6 teams. Team India are placed in Pool B alongside Malaysia, Pakistan, and New Zealand. Meanwhile, Pool A includes Germany, Australia, South Africa, and Great Britain.
Hockey India announces Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team
While speaking about the squad for the upcoming tournament, Indian Men’s Junior Hockey Team Coach CR Kumar stated:
“The selection committee has taken all previous tournaments into consideration to come up with a well-balanced team to compete and succeed in the 11th Sultan of Johor Cup 2023. We are looking to encourage and give an opportunity to players who have the skills to outperform the opponent, to play penetrative passes between lines.”
Kumar further stated that the tournament will serve as an opportunity to assess and understand all the six nations that will take part at the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023. He also stated the tournament will be played under the same climate conditions as Kuala Lumpur in December.
Meanwhile, team captain Uttam Singh stated that the whole team has been training hard for the upcoming tournament. He stated that the guys who weren’t in the squad last time have also stepped up their level of performances. Uttam also stated how the upcoming tournament is an important lead-up to the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023 where they will get to defend their title.
