Indian badminton team preview
Team India are drawn in Group C alongside strong contenders Malaysia, Chinese Taipei and Australia. While the Indian aces Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap have been left out of the squad, PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medallist, and HS Prannoy, the world No. 9 will lead the Indian badminton team.
PV Sindhu, recently came close to winning the Madrid Spain Masters 2023, but lost out to Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.
The former world champion started out the 2023 season following a long injury layoff. Her last appearance prior to that was back at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham where she won a gold medal in the women’s singles.
PV Sindhu has so far suffered first-round exits at Malaysia Open, India Open, and All England Championships, before reaching the second round of the Swiss Open.
Meanwhile, in the men’s category, team India will see the return of men’s doubles player Satwiksairaj Rankireddy. Rankireddy pulled out of the Madrid Spain Masters 2023 following an injury. However prior to that, Rankireddy and his partner Chirag Shetty won the Swiss Open 2023 doubles title just last month.
In the women’s doubles, Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, are the pair to watch. The duo recently reached the All England Open 2023 semi-finals. Meanwhile, in the women’s singles category, Kidambi Srikanth and reigning senior national women’s singles champion Anupama Upadhyaya are the players to watch.
Team India are currently in a good form after finishing with the bronze medal in the Asian Mixed Team championships earlier this year. Moreover, the men’s team created history just last year by winning the Thomas Cup.
