Stuart Broad has been handed over the mantle of acting as Joe Root’s deputy for the two match test series in England with the ECB naming him as the vice-captain
Ahead of the impending test series between England and New Zealand to be held starting the 2nd of June, a massive development has filtered in from England’s camps. The host country have revealed that quick Stuart Broad has been handed over the mantle of being the vice-captain of the side in Ben Stokes’ absence.
Ben Stokes who is England’s regular vice-captain is currently on the injury bed owing to a finger injury he had sustained previously. And in his absence, the England and Wales Cricket Board has affirmed that Broad will be asked to fill in the void.
England vs New Zealand: Stuart Broad Named England’s Vice-Captain
The ECB took to Twitter on Tuesday to reveal the news with England’s captain, Joe Root talking about the reasoning behind the decision as well.
“Stuart has been a senior player for a long time.
“He speaks extremely well, he’s got a very good cricket brain, and captaincy experience within the short format. He’s the right man to take that in Ben and Jos’ absence,” Root said while speaking at England’s presser prior to the opener in Lords.
“He’s at real peace with his game at the minute. He’s an integral part as a senior player, and very much a leader within that bowling group. I’m really pleased for him, and it’s a great opportunity for him to take that on,” Root went onto add.
For Broad, the moves is a massive vindication of his sprawling skill set. The bowler who was dropped for the first test match of England’s 2020 season went onto reclaim his place in the forthcoming showdown before going onto complete 500 wickets in the season.
Both England and New Zealand will take on each other in the first of the two test matches on Wednesday. For the Black Caps, the two match test series is a means to garner much needed playing team ahead of the showpiece summit clash against India in the WTC Final 2021.
