Aston Villa’s head coach, Steven Gerrard, has been sacked. Gerrard was named Villa’s head coach in November 2021 after guiding Rangers to victory in the Scottish Premiership. However, the Liverpool legend could not replicate the same success in the Premier League, so Aston Villa chose to sack Gerrard on October 20, 2022.

Here’s the clubs’ official statement on Gerrard

What were the reasons that led to Steven Gerrard’s sacking?

With only two victories so far in the 2022–23 Premier League season, Aston Villa has had the worst start. Aston Villa is currently just one point above the relegation zone, and there have been earlier rumours that Gerrad’s position there is in danger due to the club’s recent struggles. Aston Villa decided to sack Gerrard as their head coach following a humiliating 3-0 loss at Full Ham on Thursday night.

The departure of Gerrard is not unexpected given the Villans’ poor season start. The former Liverpool midfielder leaves after only 11 months in command and joins Thomas Tuchel, Scott Parker, and Bruno Lage as the fourth Premier League managers to leave their positions thus far in the 2022–23 season.

Gerrard was the highest-paid manager in Villa’s history on a deal worth around £5 million a year with him signing a total contract worth 18 million pounds as part of a two and a half year deal.

Under Gerrard, Aston Villa only won one of nineteen Premier League games in which they conceded the first goal. These statistics just show that Gerrard was not good enough for Aston Villa. Aston Villa will now host Brentford at Villa Park on Sunday, and the club will have to do it without Gerrard unless a suitable replacement is found.

List of potential candidates to succeed Steven Gerrard

Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino, the former Tottenham manager, is the most likely successor for Gerrard, who is still without a club following his departure from PSG. Pochettino has previously managed Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in the Premier League.

Unai Emery

After leaving Arsenal, Emery has experienced a resurgence of popularity with Villarreal in his native Spain, where he won the 2021 Europa League after defeating Manchester United in the final and contributed to the Champions League the previous year. He may perhaps end up managing Villa in the future.

Sean Dyche
