Head To Head: 4-2

These two players have faced each other six times previously, with Tsitsipas holding a 4-2 advantage.

In their first two meetings, which took place in Shanghai and Wimbledon in 2017 and 2018, it was Isner who started off on top. However, Tsitsipas has since taken control of their head-to-head competition.

Prediction

Stefanos Tsitsipas, the seventh-ranked player in the world, is in good shape this week in Cincinnati after defeating Diego Schwartzman and Filip Krajinovic in back-to-back straight sets. In the doubles, he is also forming a promising partnership with Holger Rune. In one of the few instances this season where the Greek has appeared to fade away mid-set, 24-year-old Tsitsipas was shocked by Rune in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros back in June. It will be interesting to see how far this current, erratic version of the former world number three can go both here in Cincinnati and next up in New York.

After winning in three sets against Hubert Hurkacz, Sebastian Korda, and Benjamin Bonzi this week, the seasoned John Isner will pose a strong challenge today. After losing ranking points from his semi-final appearance here last year, the American had dropped back into the top 50 on the circuit, but he is already doing an admirable job of climbing back up.

Tsitsipas leads the all-time series 4-2 after winning each of their previous four encounters, but the Greek is no longer the player who prevailed in four sets at Roland-Garros last year. Isner’s and Tsitsipas’ matches frequently end in tiebreakers, so picking the fourth seed to win at least one set and add at least one tiebreak in the match seems like a smart move in this situation.
