Prediction

This Friday’s quarterfinal matchup at the 2022 Astana Open will feature Top 10 players Hubert Hurkacz and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

To advance to the second round, where Luca Nardi, a qualifier, awaited him, Tsitsipas overcame local favourite Mikhail Kukushkin in straight sets. In the first set, neither player got close to a break point due to the strong serve defence of the other. In order to win the set, the Greek then played an outstanding tie-break.

Although Nardi had a several break points to go ahead 6-5 and would have served for the set after that, the second set unfolded in an almost identical fashion. Tsitsipas, however, managed to save himself and maintain serve. The World No. 5 won the tie-break and the match 7-6 (2), 7-6 as the set quickly entered a third tie-break (3).

Meanwhile, Francisco Cerundolo was defeated by Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets as the Polish player advanced to the next round to face Alexander Bublik. In the first set, he broke his opponent’s serve twice to take a 4-1 lead. As he won the following few games, the Kazakh started to fight back. Then Bublik had another chance to get a break of serve, but Hurkacz was too reliable for him. The World No. 10 then had a few set points in the following game on his opponent’s serve but was unable to win it. In the following game, he still succeeded in serving out the set on his own.

Hurkacz gained an early break in the second set to grab a 3-1 lead. Contrary to the previous set, Bublik was unable to interfere with the Pole’s serve this time. The 25-year-old retained his lead throughout the match to win 6-4, 6-4.

Given his past with Hurkacz, the Greek will be feeling extremely confident about his chances. All four of their previous meetings, which took place on indoor hardcourts, were won by Tsitsipas. Their games, on the other hand, are hotly contested and frequently close. With one exception, the outcomes of eight of their encounters were settled in three sets. The four titles Tsitsipas has won on indoor hardcourts attest to the fact that he performs well in these conditions.

Despite both players’ consistent performances this week at the event, the Greek star will be the favourite to advance as he has been better and has experience over the Pole.
