Prediction
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune will fight for the title on Sunday at the 2022 Stockholm Open.
After receiving a first-round bye and winning matches against Maxime Cressy and Mikael Ymer, Tsitsipas made it to the round of four. He played Emil Ruusuvuori in the semifinal, who had previously defeated Frances Tiafoe. He was the first to go up a break in the first set, leading 2-1, but Ruusuvuori quickly came back to serve to square the match. After twice breaking his opponent’s serve, the Greek went on to win four more games to win the set. Tsitsipas didn’t put in much effort in the second set, but he swiftly established a 3-1 lead. Ruusuvuori maintained his serve, but the match ended 6-2, 6-2 as the top seed won the following three games. He has already made it to the season final in his eighth year.
On the other hand, Rune won in straight sets over Cristian Garin and Thiago Monteiro to move on to the round of eight. In order to move on to the semifinals, where he met Alex de Minaur, he first overcame Cameron Norrie. The Dane broke serve to start the match, but de Minaur immediately levelled the match to make it 1-1.
The two continued to serve one another after that. The teenager was serving to remain in the first set at 5-4 when the Australian broke his serve to take it. In the first five games of the second set, four serve breaks were made as the players struggled to maintain their advantage. There were no more breaks after that, and the set eventually went into a tie-break.
Rune played superb tennis to take the match and the set. The teenager led 3-0 in the decisive set, but de Minaur was able to regain the serve later. The Australian served to tie the score at 6-5, but Rune broke his opponent’s serve to win the game 4-6, 7-6 (1), 7-5.
In the semifinal match against Ruusuvuori, Tsitsipas displayed excellent competition, but Rune was once again pushed into three sets, this time by de Minaur. However, the youngster displayed amazing composure and defeated more experienced opponents to advance. The young Dane possesses a strong backhand and a great forehand. Tsitsipas is a player he has the tools to challenge, and he has already beaten him once, at the French Open. The World No. 5 has gotten better with each match here, so it won’t be a repeat of their earlier encounter in Paris.
