Prediction
Friday’s round-robin stage finale of the 2022 ATP Finals will feature a match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev.
Tsitsipas’ campaign began with a loss to Novak Djokovic in straight sets. He needed to defeat Daniil Medvedev in his upcoming group match in order to maintain his chances of making the semifinals. The Greek got off to a strong start, leading 3-0 after the opening set. He managed to win the opening round by preventing his rival from catching up to him. A tie-break was inevitable because the pair was unbeatable on serves in the second set. Tsitsipas came back to put himself on the verge of winning after Medvedev quickly claimed the lead and went up 4-1. Although he had three match points, the 24-year-old blew them all as his rival stole the set from him and forced a tiebreaker.
In the third set, Tsitsipas was down a break and found himself in trouble. At 5-4, Medvedev was serving to win the match, and when the Greek broke his serve to tie the score, the match went to a tie-break once more. He defeated Medvedev handily in the tie-break and outperformed him to win the game 6-3, 6-7 (11), and 7-6.
To start his ATP Finals campaign on a positive note, Rublev defeated Medvedev in a hard-fought three-set match. In his second group game, he played Novak Djokovic. In the first set, he was able to keep up with the Serb for the most part. The Russian eventually lost the first set after deciding to stay in it at 5-4 after being broken. Rublev was completely outplayed by Djokovic in the second set. The 25-year-old was defeated 6-4, 6-1 by the Serb, only managing to win one game overall.
The game’s winner will move on to the semifinals. Tsitsipas has a marginally better record than Rublev when it comes to handling pressure, so he is more likely to prevail in this match.
