Opposition lawmakers in the JK Assembly criticised the 26-acre land allocation to Muralitharan’s company, questioning why land was given “free of cost” to outsiders while locals were denied plots for housing under the Prime Minister’s Awas Yojana (PMAY).

Muralidaran had been allotted 206 kanals (about 25 acres) in Kathua to establish a ₹1,642-crore aluminium can manufacturing and beverage filling unit under the new industrial policy introduced after the abrogation of Article 370 and his company, Ceylon Beverages, which already operates a plant in Karnataka, was expanding into Jammu and Kashmir, with the lease signed on June 14 last year.

How Muttiah Muralitharan fared throughout his career?

Despite his remarkable success, Muralitharan’s career was not without controversy. His unique bowling action, attributed to a congenital bend in his arm, often came under scrutiny. However, after undergoing biomechanical analysis, the International Cricket Council (ICC) twice cleared his action, reaffirming the legality of his deliveries. His dominance in Test cricket was further underscored by holding the No. 1 ranking in ICC’s player standings for a record 1,711 days.

Muralitharan’s journey to cricketing greatness began in his school days before he joined the Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club. His impressive performance in a practice match against Australia led to his Test debut in 1992. Over the years, he achieved several milestones, surpassing legends like Courtney Walsh, Wasim Akram, and eventually Shane Warne to claim the record for most Test wickets. His 800th and final Test wicket in 2010 remains one of the most iconic moments in cricketing history.
