What is the Squash World Cup?
The Squash World Cup is all set to begin in Chennai, with eight teams battling against each other to become champions.
During the Squash World Cup, national team squads of two men and two women compete against one another in four-match ties.
From June 13–17, 2023, the relaunched competition will take place in Chennai. The event is supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sport in India and will take place on a spectacular all-glass exhibition court within the Express Avenue Mall.
The Squash World Cup’s History
16 teams competed in the 1996 Squash World Cup, which was held in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
Squash World Cup champions Australia beat their rivals and No. 2 seeds England 3-0, as Brett Martin, Michelle Martin, and Rodney Eyles beat Mark Chaloner, Suzanne Horner, and Chris Walker.
Since then, the Squash World Cup has been held twice, with England and Egypt winning the championships in’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, in 1999 and Chennai, India, in 2011, respectively.
An Under-21 World Cup was held in Chennai the following year. Egypt won the tournament again after defeating India in the final, with victories from India’s Dipika Pallikal over Nour El Sherbini, who would go on to become the world champion. Additionally, Marwan ElShorbagy and Karim Abdel Gawad defeated Ramit Tandon.
A number of modifications were made to the competition this year, including the first-ever use of seven points in WSF history and gender balance among teams.
