Sports Personality Of The Year (SPOTY) 2021 Nominees List
Sarah Storey
Age: 44 years old
Sport: Paralympic cycling -a sport that takes place at the Paralympic Games.
Storey’s place as Great Britain’s most successful Paralympian of all time was cemented by a 17th Paralympic medal.
Storey successfully defended her women’s C4-5 road race championship in Tokyo, one gold ahead of the previous record-holder Kenny Mike.
Storey’s gold was her third at the Tokyo Paralympics and her eighth overall since making her debut as a 14-year-old swimmer in Barcelona in 1992.
She had previously won the individual pursuit on the track, winning the time trial, giving her a total of 28 Paralympic medals.
Sterling, Raheem
Age: 27 years old
Sports: Football
England made history at Euro 2020, reaching the final of a major tournament for the first time in 55 years before losing on penalties against Italy.
The Manchester City forward scored three goals at the tournament, including the game-winning goal in England’s historic victory over Germany.
Along with defenders Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker, Sterling was one of three England players named to Uefa’s tournament squad. He is also a popular figure among fans of sports betting in Canada because of his achievements on the pitch.
During the 2020-21 season, he scored 10 Premier League goals as City won the title for the third time in four years.
Emma Raducanu
Age: 19 years old
Sport: Tennis
Raducanu’s incredible run to win the US Open broke a 44-year wait for a British women’s Grand Slam singles champion.
She was the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title in the Open era, defeating Canadian Leylah Fernandez in straight sets.
Raducanu won the tournament without dropping a set, making her the first Romanian woman to win a Grand Slam since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004.
While awaiting her A-level results, she made a name for herself at Wimbledon, defying her 338 ranking to reach the fourth round before retiring from her last-16 match due to lung problems.
Peaty, Adam
Age: 26 years old
Sport: Swimming
Peaty again made history when he won gold in the 100m breaststroke in Tokyo, becoming the first British swimmer to defend an Olympic title.
He blew the rivals out of the water to win Britain’s first gold medal at the Games.
Peaty now has the 16 fastest times over the distance in history (this race was the fifth fastest), and he is the only swimmer ever to break the 57-second barrier with his 2019 world record.
He also played a crucial role in Great Britain’s unprecedented mixed 4x100m medley relay victory and the men’s medley relay team.
Tyson Fury
Age: 33 years old
Sport: Boxing
He is a professional boxer. In October, Fury retained his WBC gold with a thrilling 11th-round win against American Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas.
In a gruelling battle to retain his title, he was knocked down twice in the fourth round before knocking out Wilder.
It cemented Fury’s place among the top heavyweights and established him as the dominant force in the trilogy versus Wilder, which began with a contentious draw in 2018 and ended with the British fighter winning their rematch in 2020.
Fury’s father, John, later disclosed that his son had surgery on both elbows after sustaining a significant injury before his second victory over Wilder.
Tom Daley
Age: 27 years old
Sport: Diving
Daley finally won an Olympic diving medal at his fourth Games, competing in the synchronized 10m platform event alongside Matty Lee.
After making an appearance on the international scene as a kid, the audience had followed him as he has won major titles, experienced his anguish when his father died of cancer, and rejoiced when he married and later became a father.
Then, at the age of 27 and 13 years after his Olympic debut, he won an emotional victory at the Tokyo Olympics.
Daley also took bronze in the men’s 10m platform, making him the first British diver to win four medals at the Olympics.
Location-SPOTY will be held without the presence of a studio audience.
Following new coronavirus restrictions in England, the Sports Personality of the Year presentation will be broadcast without a studio audience.
The concert will go on as planned with crucial employees and contributors in hand. “In light of the UK Government’s declaration that additional Coronavirus safeguards will be implemented in England, we’ve decided not to have a studio audience at this year’s event.”
The UK government issued ‘Plan B’ measures earlier this week in response to the Omicron form of Covid-19, which included recommendations for people in England to work from home as much as possible and for specific events to request proof of full immunization or a recent negative Covid test from spectators.
