Spencer Dinwiddie found out via Twitter, just like the rest of us, that he was being traded back to the Nets

He didn’t seem too upset about it, and he said that his son already wanted to go back to Brooklyn. But there is more to the trade that you need to know.

They say that the Nets will get Irving and Markieff Morris in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, an unprotected first-round pick in 2029, and second-round picks in 2027 and 2029.

Sources say that talks between the Nets and the Mavericks picked up speed on Sunday. The Lakers and Nets talked about a possible trade several times, but the Nets liked the deal that Dallas offered, which gave them a point guard, a wing player, and future draught picks.

Nico Harrison is the general manager of the Mavericks. He has known Irving for a long time, going back to when they both worked at Nike. Dallas coach Jason Kidd also liked the trade, which gave the Mavericks another star player to go with Luka Doncic. The Mavs can wait to decide on a new deal for Irving until they see how the rest of the season goes.

Dinwiddie, on the other hand, is going back to Brooklyn. Where he played for five years until he hurt his ACL early in the 2020-21 season.

Irving’s time in Brooklyn is over after a rough four years that included injuries, missing dozens of games because he didn’t want to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and getting suspended this season for promoting a movie with anti-Semitic themes.

Irving, who is 30, chose to play out the last year of his contract in the summer. But he asked to be traded earlier this week because he and Brooklyn couldn’t agree on an extension.

Sources say Irving has been trying to get a contract extension for around four years. And $198.5 million, which is the most he can get until June 30. He also has until June 30 to sign a two-year, $78.6 million contract extension with the Mavericks.

Irving has played in less than 150 games over the last four years. But when he was on the court, he was at his best. Irving is playing very well this season. He is averaging just over 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game.
