Southeast Asian Games (SEA) 2023: Sports list, motto, mascot name, logo
The logo chosen features the golden Angkor Wat emblem, four different coloured dragons, Southeast Asian Games Federation logo with 11 rings in gold and the words,”32nd SEA Games Cambodia 2023 Phnom Penh”.
The mascot, meanwhile, is one male rabbit named “Borey” and one female rabbit named “Rumduol”. “Borey” is seen holding a torch, while “Rumduol” is greeting the guests, symbolising the welcoming and friendly attitude of Cambodians.
The motto for the 32nd SEA Games is “Sports Live in Peace”. SEA Games organizing Committee (CAMSOC) explained that “There is peace only when sports are alive, sports are active and sports are developed. The 32nd SEA Games came about because Cambodia has peace as a promising factor. Without peace, there will be no rights to sports activities, rights to organise sports events, development and SEA Games in Cambodia”.
The South East Asian Games will begin on May 5 and last until May 17, 2023, in Cambodia. It will be the first time a regional sporting event has been held in the kingdom.
A 200-Day Countdown
On October 17, Cambodia held the 200-day countdown to the main event.
Thong Khon, the minister of tourism and permanent vice-president of CAMSOC, said that with less than seven months till the start of the biggest sporting event in Southeast Asia, the organising committee is on track to make the games a success.
At the press conference, he assured reporters, “We are confident that the games will be well organised.” He continued by saying that various institutions’ collaboration and support had allowed for the completion of a large portion of the essential work.
He said that all competition venues had now been confirmed and that several venues were now undergoing repairs or renovations.
Venue Of The SEA Games
The main stadium is the Morodok Techno National Sports Complex, which is a 75,000-seat venue. It will consist of a football, athletics, and swimming complex and an indoor arena with a capacity of 15,000 people.
On October 18, the organisers announced that Teqball would be played as a demonstration along with 37 other approved sports. The previous record, which included 530 events in 56 sports, was established at the 30th Games in the Philippines in 2019.
At every game, martial arts are significant. Judo, karate, mixed martial arts, pencak silat, and taekwondo competitions will all take place. Cambodia chose its traditional mixed martial arts, Kun Bokator and Kun Khmer, together with arnis, jiujitsu, kickboxing, and Vovinam.
Aside from traditional boat races and jet ski competitions, the organisers also introduce novel and unusual sports to the games.
Tegball is a demonstration sport where it is combined with elements of football and table tennis, which will be played on a curbed table. The medals awarded to this sport’s champions will not be added to their winning teams’ total.
Four Locations Will Host The 32nd SEA Games
The majority of sporting events will take place in Phnom Penh at Morodok Techo National Stadium and nearby locations, including the opening and closing ceremonies.
Sports events will also be held in the city’s Olympic Stadium Centre, Chroy Changvar, Sokha Hotel, and Naga World.
Outside of Phnom Penh, competitions are held at facilities in Siem Reap (road cycling and marathon), Kep (duathlon, aquathon, and triathlon), Kampot (traditional boat racing), and Preah Sihanouk (sailing and jet-ski).
Cambodia will host the 12th Para Games from June 3 to June 9, following the SEA Games.
