2023 Southeast Asian Games schedule, date, venue, format, & participating teams

With one game left in their men’s football campaign at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games, Malaysia has succumbed to the Group of Death, despite it always seemed like it would be a formidable assignment. The Malaysians’ chances of finishing in the top two teams in Group B and moving on to the semifinals were officially dashed after a 2-1 loss to Vietnam on Monday. This was their second setback of the competition after also falling to Thailand the previous time.

The fact that Malaysia were placed in the same group as the reigning champions Vietnam and the record-breaking 16-time gold medalists Thailand, as well as bitter rival Singapore, made it clear that it would never be simple. On Friday, Malaysia will now compete against Singapore with little more on the line than bragging rights. However, Malaysia will be heartbroken after the match against Vietnam was decided by the closest of margins after a questionable penalty for the reigning champions.
