The Southeast Asian Games (SEA) is yet again all set to host the indoor volleyball event for its 2023 edition, ahead of the competition, check out the full schedule, how to watch live, and more

Up until now, Volleyball has featured in every SEA Games since 1977, except the 1999 event.

The indoor volleyball events of the SEA games will take place from 3 to 14 May 2023 at the Indoor Main Hall located at the Olympic Complex in Phnom Penh.

Teams and format

Altogether, eight countries are set to take part in both the men’s and women’s editions at SEA Games 2023. The eight teams are:

  • Cambodia (hosts)
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
  • Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam

The eight teams will be divided into four teams each, who will compete in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group will then play in the semi-final and finals. Meanwhile, the rest of the teams will compete for positions five to eight.

Competition preview

Ahead of the competition, Alyssa Valdez, will captain the Philippines’ women’s team for the first time. Valdes is playing her fifth straight Southeast Asian Games, and will be looking to lead her team to a podium place after an 18-year drought. The Philippines have come in fourth place in the past three editions.

Meanwhile, Thailand are 13-time consecutive winners while Vietnam have won a silver in the past 10 of 11 editions. In the men’s event, Indonesia and Thailand have won the event amongst themselves since 1985. While Indonesia have won 10 titles, Thailand have won eight. Indonesia are the reigning champions of the previous two editions.
