It may be a shootout between the Philippines and Indonesia for regional basketball supremacy this time around because the eight participating teams are equally split into two groups. After the culmination of preliminary round matches in the men’s competition, best two teams from each group will advance to the medal elimination rounds.
Men’s basketball in the Southeast Asian Games has been dominated by the Philippines, who had triumphed in 18 of the previous 21 competitions. As a result, Indonesia’s surprise victory over the Philippines at Hanoi 2021 was unexpected. The Gilas Pilipinas had won 13 straight 5-on-5 gold medals before that shocking loss. Even without big-name athletes like Kai Sotto and Jordan Clarkson, the Gilas are now determined to reclaim their SEA Games crown at Cambodia 2023.
