In the highly-anticipated men’s basketball match on Thursday at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games, the Philippines was defeated by Cambodia, 79-68, due to sluggish shooting all night. Due to the hosts’ naturalised players’ ferocious shooting, Gilas Pilipinas found themselves down by double digits early in the game at Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh.

In their second match of the tournament’s preliminary round, the Philippines men’s basketball team lost to Cambodia 68-79, suffering their first defeat of the 2023 SEA Games. The Filipinos were forced to play chase from the start after the hosts used a strong opening period to jump out to a 26-14 advantage. The Cambodians, who had 3×3 gold medalist Darrin Dorsey, proved to be a particularly difficult opponent as the Pilipinas battled to get their own strokes land. With 22 points, seven assists, and four rebounds, Dorsey dropped a MVP worthy performance.

The Cambodians tightened their defensive line after embarking on a 9-0 run in the third to establish lead of 20 points. Despite the Philippines’ best efforts to reduce the gap, Cambodia won the fiercely competitive game, leaving the Philippines with a plenty to chew on as they consider their gold medal campaign with a 1-1 record after two games. If they want to maintain their chances of winning a medal, Philippines must win their upcoming encounter against Singapore.
