An San, the South Korean Archer, had already won two gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics but has been smeared with anti-feminist comments owing to her short hair

She has at the same time received support from women all over the world as her short hairstyle had become a reason for men to abuse her online. Many people were of the opinion that her hairstyle depicted that she was a feminist while others wanted her to apologize and that her Olympic medals should be taken away from her.

South Korea’s economy might be the world’s 12 largest economy and it might be a leading technological power, but it still is a male dominated society and doesn’t consider women as equal or respect their rights. There is constant misogyny on social media, which resulted due to anti-feminism backlash in the country.

An had already won two gold medals in the women’s event and also in the mixed team event of archery. She scored a perfect 680 and also became the top scorer in the individual qualification round for the Olympics and went on to break the record that was created in 1996.

Many women from across the country came out in her support. A woman lawmaker, Jang Hye-yeong tweeted, “Even if you win an Olympic gold medal with your own skills and abilities, as long as sexism persist in our society, you get insulted.

She further went on to say, “We are facing a strange day in which Korean archery is now in the best in the world, but the integrity is thrown to the ground because of sexism.”

According to local reports, as many as 6,000 women with short hair shared their photos on social media in order to support An. Even actress Koo Hye-sun and lawmaker Ryu Ho Jeong, who is the country youngest MP also shared photos on their social media accounts. Ryu was also once a victim of sexism as she was criticised for wearing a dress in the parliament.
