His grandfather, Rajan Pancholi, was a filmmaker, while his parents had made a name for themselves in the film industry. Sooraj completed his schooling in Mumbai and later went to the United States to study acting.

Before making his debut as an actor, Sooraj worked as an assistant director on a few films, including Guzaarish and Ek Tha Tiger. His big break came in 2015 when he was cast as the lead in Hero, which was a remake of the 1983 film of the same name.
32-year-old Sooraj received critical acclaim for his performance in the movie and won the Filmfare Award for Best Newcomer in 2016.
