In the opening round of the Cazoo Snooker World Championship in Sheffield, Ronnie O’Sullivan defeated Pang Junxu 10-7 to set a new record for appearances in the Crucible. When he was brought back from 9-4 to 9-7 in the final moments, O’Sullivan appeared vulnerable, but he eventually advanced to the second round for the 27th time.

Against 23-year-old rookie Pang, O’Sullivan won the opening five sets to start his title defense. O’Sullivan’s lead after the opening session was cut to 6-3 by Pang, who countered with a 133 clearance in the sixth. In the evening session, O’Sullivan led by 8-3 and 9-4 points before Pang won the next three frames to make it 9-7. However, the reigning world champion held his nerve to bag the 17th frame and clinch 10-7 victory to qualify for the next round.

In another opening round matchup at the Cazoo World Championship in Sheffield, Neil Robertson had a 6-3 advantage over Wu Yize after the first session. After building a 6-3 lead over Ricky Walden, Luca Brecel on the opposite table gave himself a good chance to win his first-ever Crucible match. On his Crucible debut, Jak Jones got off to a strong start, pulling ahead of Ali Carter 5-4.

It is official that the winner of the 2023 Snooker World Championship will get £500,000 from the $2,395,000 total prize fund. In contrast, each losing semifinalist will receive £100,000 and the competition’s runner-up will receive £200,000. Following his first-round elimination at the hands of Ronnie O’Sullivan, debutant Pang Janxu is set to earn approximately £20,000.
