After Simiso Buthelezi sadly died during their fight last weekend, his opponent boxer Siphesihle Mntungwa has acknowledged having suicidal thoughts
Siphesihle Mntungwa told Sowetan Live, a South African daily newspaper, that he’s gotten threats and nasty comments accusing him of killing the 24-year-old during their sanctioned bout on Sunday.
Siphesihle Mntungwa Says He Wants To Kill Himself After Getting Death Threats Over The Death Of Boxer Simiso Buthelezi
Very scary in South Africa please 🙏🏼 for Simiso Buthelezi (4-1). “When Simiso was hospitalised, I was subjected to a barrage of hatred and insults on social media sites,” Mntungwa added, “and it has escalated now that he has passed away.”
“I can’t handle it any longer. There is only one thing left for me to do: kill myself.”
Mntungwa went on to explain that he did not kill Simiso and that it was never his plan to do so. Rather, the 27-year-old claimed he was simply engaging in a boxing competition, with the goal of capturing the title so he could financially support his family.
“I did not kill Simiso,” he stated emphatically. “We may have been in a boxing match, but it was not a life or death situation.”
“All I wanted was to win the title, which could potentially improve my and my family’s lives.”
Simiso became so disoriented during the 10th round of his fight with Mntungwa in South Africa that he began striking the air, causing the referee to stop the fight.
Simiso was brought to the hospital after collapsing in the ring following the terrifying spectacle… but sadly, he died there later.
Mmeli Mkhize, Mntungwa’s trainer, said he’s seeking professional help for the fighter after the combatant’s alarming revelation to the outlet.
He went on to say that the threats against Mntungwa have been so severe that they can’t even pay their respects to Simiso for fear of what would be done to them there.
“We won’t be able to attend the burial because we are terrified,” he explained.
