Sinquefield Cup Grand Chess Tour 2022 Day 8 Results & Updated Standings
Round 8 of the 2022 Sinquefield Cup more than made up for previous round’s fairly lackluster performance as Alireza Firouzja defeated leader Wesley So in a thrilling match of Round 8 and moved to the top of standings with 4.5 points in 7 games. Within a few moves, So moved from holding a won position to one that was lost, and once Firouzja gained the upper hand, he executed with perfect finesse.
The Grand Chess Tour prize of $100,000 could very well be lost to So as a result of this defeat. Contrarily, Firouzja’s victory in this game put him in a great position to win this competition as well as perhaps the entire Grand Chess Tour.
During Round 9 matches, Nepomnitachi vs Hans Niemann, Firouzja vs Maxime Vachier-Lagrave & Wesley So vs Dominguez will be crucial to the final rankings. The upcoming round on Sunday will also be 2022 Sinquefield Cup’s final round and will begin at 11:00 AM PT.
