The Asian Games 2023 are currently in full flow, and the Indian team is showcasing their skills in Hangzhou, China. India’s shot-put athlete, Kiran Baliyan earned a bronze with a spectacular throw of 17.36 metres at the Asian Games 2023.

Lijiao Gong, who started at 19.58 metres and had five throws that were 19 or higher out of six, won the gold medal. Jiayuan Song, also from China, won the silver at 18.92 metres.

Out of her six attempts in the final, Manpreet Kaur, the second Indian shot put athlete competing, placed fifth with a best throw of 16.25 metres. With this, India won its first medals at the Asian Games 2023.

The Uttar Pradesh-born shot putter, 24, was born on March 6, 1999. The father of Kiran Baliyan, Satish Baliyan, works for the Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC) of the Uttar Pradesh Police and hails from Muzaffarnagar (UP).

At the Inter-State Athletics meet in Bhubaneswar earlier this year, Kiran Baliyan of Meerut won the gold medal in the shot put with a distance of 17.17 metres, becoming the national champion. She made a compelling argument by surpassing the Asian Games qualifying record of 16.30 metres in the state of Odisha’s capital.

Prior to the Asian Games, Kiran’s highest position in the world rankings was 161. She used to work out at the Meerut stadium every morning and evening while her mother, Bobby Baliyan, kept an eye on her.

Kiran’s mother occasionally accompanied her to the stadium in Agra prior to her father’s posting in Meerut. However, the mother had to travel daily with her daughter because there was no female trainer in Meerut.
