A look at Serie A prize money and how it’s distributed
The Serie A prize money comes from a variety of commercial partnerships, sales of domestic and international television rights, sponsorships, and other endeavours. Althought this year’s prize money is not revealed yet, we can assume from the 2022-2023 season.
Approximately €1.5 billion was awarded in prize money for Serie A in 2022–2023, a considerable increase from €1.1 billion in the 2021-2022 season. The 20 teams split the Serie A prize money according to a 50-30-20 formula.
Regardless of the performance or the ranking, all the teams participating in the Serie A competition share 50% among each other. Teams’ placement in the final table determines how much money they receive; higher-placed teams receive a larger portion of the prize money (30%).
Meanwhile, the popularity and the fan base also plays a huge factor in distributing the prize money. Measured by TV audience, stadium attendance, social media followers and many more, 20% of the prize money is given to popular teams.
