The upcoming Tokyo Olympics has seen another significant name pulling out. After Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem, Serena Williams has decided to skip the Olympics as well
United States’ Tennis star Serena Williams has decided to skip the Olympics scheduled to start in Tokyo from the 23rd of July. Serena Williams announced the decision in the pre-Wimbledon video conference with the reporters on Sunday. Williams will open her Wimbledon campaign against Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Tuesday.
Serena Williams, 39, had already expressed doubts over her participation in the Olympics last month. Williams cited international travel restrictions as the reason behind her doubts and it is seen for her withdrawal. The veteran is the joint-most successful Olympian, alongside her sister Venus, earning a gold medal in singles and thrice in doubles.
There’s a lot of reasons that I made my Olympics decision: Serena Williams
Serena Williams stated that she should not be on the Olympic list even if she is currently. The 23-time Grand Slam champion revealed there are plenty of reasons why she opted out of the Tokyo event. Even though Willaims admitted it had been a wonderful place for her, she has chosen not to keep thinking about it.
“I’m actually not on the Olympic list, so. There’s a lot of reasons that I made my Olympic decision. I don’t really want to – I don’t feel like going into them today. I really haven’t thought about it, so I’m going to keep not thinking about it,” she told in the press conference.

Serena Williams’ exploits at the Olympics
Serena won all of her gold medals with her elder sister as her partner. She earned four gold medals at Summer Games for her nation – in both singles and doubles at the 2012 London event and in doubles at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and eight years later in Beijing.
The 2016 Olympic games at Rio de Janeiro saw Williams crash out of the third round of the singles competition to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina. On the other hand, Venus and Serena sustained a loss in the first round of the doubles competition. But before that, they had an imposing record of 15-0 as an Olympic pair.
