Serena Williams Announces Retirement
Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion who has represented tennis since winning her first U.S. Open in 1999, declared in a Vogue magazine piece published online on Tuesday that she wanted to retire from the sport after competing in the competition, which begins later this month.
The American tennis player told Vogue that she has never liked the word “retirement.” She has been using the phrase “transition” because she doesn’t think it’s a modern word. Williams said she wants to use that word carefully because it has a very particular and important significance to a group of people. Perhaps the best way to summarise what she is doing is through evolution. The 40-year-old tennis icon, Williams in a cover story for Vogue said:
I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me,”
At the currently taking place Canadian Open 2022, also known as the National Bank Open, Williams resumed her return. On the opening day of the Canadian Open, Williams made it to the second round while her sister Venus Williams lost right away.
