In a significant development, the esteemed Supreme Court collegium, presided over by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, has put forth the names of Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior advocate KV Viswanathan for consideration as judges of the apex court.

The Supreme Court is now operating with 32 judges, despite having a sanctioned strength of 34 justices, according to the five-member collegium. In the past two days, Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and MR Shah, both members of the Supreme Court, have retired.
The collegium, which also included Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, and Sanjiv Khanna, highlighted in its determination that by the second week of July, there will be four more vacancies, bringing the number of active justices down to 28.
However, the collegium’s recommendation opens up an exciting possibility for the administration.
If the collegium’s proposal is accepted by the government, KV Viswanathan would succeed Justice JB Pardiwala, who will retire on August 11, 2030, as Chief Justice of India and hold the position until May 25, 2031.

Who is KV Viswanathan?
KV Viswanathan is a renowned Indian advocate. He has been in the news because the Supreme Court collegium recommended his name for consideration as a judge of the apex court.
K. V. Viswanathan was born on Thursday, 26 May 1966 (age 57 years; as of 2023) in Kalpathy, Palakkad, Kerala and is a Hindu by religion. Hailing from a family of lawyers, Viswanathan decided to pursue a career in law when he was in college and he attended Coimbatore Law College, Bharathiar University (first batch), Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, to pursue a five-year integrated law degree. During his college days, Viswanathan practised at the chambers of advocate KA Ramachandran, a criminal trial lawyer at Coimbatore, as a legal intern and enrolled with the Bar Council of India in 1988.
Throughout the course of more than 32 years, he has had a distinguished career in the field of law. He was named a senior advocate by the Supreme Court in 2009, and since then, he has testified in numerous reported cases in a variety of legal fields, including constitutional law, criminal law, commercial law, securities law, insolvency code, arbitration, etc., before the Supreme Court and High Courts across India.
KV Viswanathan was chosen in 2013 to serve as India’s Additional Solicitor General. Moreover, he has had the honor of serving as an Amicus Curiae in several cases when the Supreme Court of India needed assistance.
Furthermore, he serves as a member of the editorial board for Supreme Court Cases (SCC), the Supreme Court of India’s most frequently referenced legal journal.
