He was born on December 29, 1963, in San Mateo, California, U.S. He was brought up in Naperville, Illinois. His father’s name is Thomas Payton and his mother’s name is Jeanne Payton.
He did his schooling at Naperville Central High School in Naperville, Illinois. Later, he got a football scholarship and enrolled at Eastern Illinois University.

After playing for his school and college, Sean Payton played for the Kansas City Chiefs for one day despite not being drafted in the 1987 NFL Draft.
