In the early morning hours of December 19th, the body of a highly decorated Navy special operations commanding officer Robert Ramirez III was discovered in his San Diego residence, know his cause of death
The death of the leader came only a month after he had assumed leadership of the elite Navy SEAL Team 1 at Naval Base Coronado. According to NBC San Diego, Robert “Bobby” Ramirez III was promoted to Commander on September 1, 2019 and given responsibility for SEAL Team 1 of the West Coast Special Warfare Unit in June 2022.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the death of the decorated officer, but the Naval Special Warfare Command said on Wednesday that foul play is not suspected.
The 47 year old commanding officer of SEAL Team 1, was found dead in his home in San Diego County on Monday.
Ramirez was the leader of SEAL Team 1 at Naval Base Coronado in California. His unit was a part of Naval Special Warfare Group 1. Also as reported by Military Times, he assumed leadership of the unit last month.

After joining the Navy in 1996, Ramirez served for over 25 years. Graduating from Navy Special Warfare Basic Training in Coronado in 1997 and was commissioned in 2004. He has received numerous accolades and decorations during his time in the service, including five Bronze Star Medals.
Ramirez enlisted in the military in 1996, and he was commissioned in 2008. Ramirez has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. And as a result of his courageous actions while there, he has been awarded three Combat Action Ribbons, five Bronze Star Medals, and two Bronze Star Medals with a Combat ‘V’ decoration.

Many of Ramirez’s friends and coworkers came together to honour the late leader. Captain David Abernathy called Ramirez an “excellent leader, loyal husband and father, and a close friend to us all.”
The death of Ramirez is the second in less than a year of a SEAL squad commander. During helicopter rope training in Virginia in December 2021, Cmdr. Brian Bourgeois, the commanding officer of the Navy’s elite SEAL Team 8, tragically fell to his death.
