At the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh on Tuesday (9 May), the Philippines men’s basketball team thrashed Malaysia 94-49 to get their Southeast Asian Games campaign off to a winning start.

The Filipinos dominated from tip-off, breezing to a 33-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The win was achieved despite Jordan Clarkson and Kai Sotto being absent from the event.

From then on, they didn’t look back, increasing the score to 58-22 at halftime and building an impregnable margin that Malaysia couldn’t overcome.

At the last Games in 2021, Indonesia pulled off a surprise upset to win the men’s basketball gold, ending the Filipinos’ 33-year dominance of the sport in the region.

When asked if the group expected any future surprises from their nearby adversaries, Oftana remained steadfast. He said, “No, we have no expectations of it. We’re just going to triumph.”
