The Scripps National Spelling Bee features the smartest students from across America, and it is the country’s most anticipated academic competition.

This year’s competition marks the 96th edition ever since its inception, and it will feature 245 spellers ranging from ages 8 to 15, with 65 spellers having previously competed.
Last year, Dev Shah emerged as the winner with the winning word “psammophile.” The Florida native entered the finals after naming words like “aegagrus,” “rommack,” and “tolsester”. Shah beat runner-up Charlotte Walsh, who failed to spell the word “daviely”.

The Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, located in National Harbor, Maryland, will host the entire competition.
Prize money for is awarded in the following order:
- Finalist to 7th place – $2,000
- 6th place – $2,500
- 5th place – $5,000
- 4th place – $10,000
- 3rd place – $15,000
- 2nd place – $25,000
The winner receives: $50,000 cash (from Scripps) and the Scripps Cup. $2,500 cash and reference library from Encyclopedia Britannica and $400 of reference works, including a 1768 Encyclopedia Britannica Replica Set and a three-year membership to Britannica Online Premium. $1,000 Scholastic Dollars to be donated to the school of the champion’s choice in their honor.
245 contestants are representing 173 public schools, 32 private schools, 21 parochial schools and 12 charter schools and seven are homeschooled.

Interested viewers can watch the live semifinals and finals broadcast of the upcoming competition on Ion TV starting from Wednesday, May 29 to Thursday, May 30. Meanwhile, fans can watch the live stream of the entire event on ION Plus, Fubo (free trial), and spellingbee.com ION Plus and spellingbee.com will provide the live stream of all rounds, while Fubo will stream the semifinals and finals.
