So far, West Bengal are the most successful team in Santosh Trophy history with 32 title wins. Meanwhile Kerala are the winners of the last edition after they beat West Bengal in the final via penalties.
The Santosh Trophy format
The Santosh Trophy is India’s premier inter-state football tournament, which initially began in 1942. The current 2022-23 season is the 76th edition and also features Institutional teams like Services and Railways.
This year, the preliminary stage of the tournament featured 36 states and Union Territories of India divided into six groups of six teams each.
All the teams faced each other in a single-legged round-robin format following which the six group winners qualified for the finals rounds. The six teams that qualified were Delhi, Kerala, Goa, West Bengal, Meghalaya and Punjab. The three best runner-ups – Karnataka, Manipur, and Maharashtra also joined them for the final round of Santosh Trophy 2022-23.
Meanwhile, the host state Odisha earned an automatic berth alongside Services and Railways. As such, the final round was a 12-team affair with the 12 teams divided into two groups of six teams.

The teams in each group faced each other in a single-legged round-robin format. The top two teams from each group – Punjab and Karnataka from Group A and Services and Meghalaya from Group B – made the knockout rounds, consisting of the semi-finals and the final.

From the 12 teams, the top two teams from each group have now qualified for the semi-finals round.
Santosh Trophy 2022-23 Venue
The 2022-23 Santosh Trophy knockout rounds will take place at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Interestingly, this is the first time ever in the tournament’s history that the matches will take place on foreign soil.
