The Santosh Trophy had its first edition in 1942, and the ongoing season is the 76th edition. It is also the premier inter-state football tournament in India.
Besides state teams, Institutional teams like Services and Railways also compete in the Santosh Trophy. West Bengal are currently the most successful team in the tournament’s history with 32 titles. Meanwhile Kerala are the reigning champions.
Santosh Trophy 2022-23
The Santosh Trophy 2022-23 began with 36 states and Union Territories of India in the preliminary stage. All the teams were drawn into six groups of six teams each.
Following a single-legged round-robin format, the six group winners, and the three best runner-ups, qualified for the final round.
Odisha, who are the final round hosts, joined the final round with an automatic berth alongside Services and Railways.
Santosh Trophy 2022-23 final round groups and format
Ahead of the knockout rounds, the 12 teams took part in the final round. The 12 teams were divided into two groups consisting of six teams each.
Group A
Punjab, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, Maharashtra, Goa
Group B
West Bengal, Delhi, Services, Railways, Manipur, Meghalaya
All the 12 teams faced the other teams in their own groups in a single-legged round-robin format. Following which, the top two teams from each group qualified for the knockout rounds. The knockout rounds consisted of the semi-finals and the final.

This year’s edition of the Santosh Trophy knockout rounds are currently taking place at the King Fahd International Stadium, located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Interestingly, it is the first time in the tournament’s history that matches are taking place on foreign soil.
