Letsโs know about the history of the San Francisco Marathon Run
The first-ever San Francisco Marathon Run was held in 1970, and was organised by the Pamakids Runners Club. The first-ever event was won by Athol Barton a cab driver from Reno, Nevada. About 900 participants took part in this inaugural race. In 2005, the participants increased to 11,290 and subsequently to 19,000 in 2008 and approximately 21,000 participants in the year 2009. The event held in 2009 is said to be one of the most successful events in the history of this event. The 2009s event was hosted by an Ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes and Runners World Columnist Bart Yasso.
Prize money for San Francisco Marathon Run Event Winners
Since the inaugural of the event, the prize money has varied from year to year. The first winner of the event was rewarded a t-shirt, in 1986s, the winner was rewarded with $5000 and a new car. In the 1998 edition of the marathon, many runners were attracted to the $35,000 prize money. Since 2005 no prize money has been offered to the winners due to a lack of funding and sponsors.
