Who Was Samy Vellu?
Samy Vellu was a well-known Malaysian politician. He has been in the news because he died recently while sleeping.
His full name was Tun Samy Vellu. He was born on 8 March 1936 in Kluang, Johor, British Malaya (now Malaysia). His fahter’s name was Sangalimuthu. He was of Indian descent but hold Malaysian nationality.
He did his graduation in architecture.
He was married to Indrani Samy Vellu and together, they had one son whose name is Datuk Seri S. Vell Paari.
He died on 15 September 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At the time of his death, he was 86 years old.
His Career
He was a professional architect and a member of both the Malaysian Institute of Architects and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
When Samy Vellu joined the Batu Caves MIC unit at the age of 23, in 1959, his political career officially started. He was chosen as the party’s leader and a member of the Selangor MIC committee after serving for five years.
He gained notoriety by scaling the flag pole of the Indonesian embassy, removing the flag, and setting it ablaze. He was given an RM2 fine and prosecuted in court. On the front pages, he was referred to as Hero Malaysia.
Between September 1974 and March 2008, he served eight times as a member of the parliament representing the Sungai Siput seat. From June 1983 to June 1989 and again from May 1995 to March 2008, he held the positions of Minister of Works, Minister of Energy, Telecommunications, and Posts, and Minister of Works and Public Amenities.
From October 1979 to December 2010, he was a member and the seventh president of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), a constituent party of the governing Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.
He has been the president of the MIC for the longest period of time—31 years—and one of the longest-serving Cabinet ministers—29 years.
He declared his retirement from politics in December 2010, opening the door for G. Palanivel, the MIC’s deputy president at the time, to succeed him as the next party leader.
