She made history as the first female president of Tanzania and also as the first president born in Zanzibar.

Early Life

Hassanโ€™s early life was in Zanzibar, which was separate from Tanganyika before the two merged to form Tanzania. After completing her secondary education in 1977, she spent the following three decades working in various roles, including positions at the World Food Programme and the Zanzibar government, all while pursuing further education.

She obtained multiple certificates and diplomas, including a postgraduate diploma in economics from the University of Manchester in the UK in 1994 and a masterโ€™s degree in community economic development via a joint program from the Open University of Tanzania and Southern New Hampshire University. In 1978, she married Hafidh Ameir, and they have four children.

Samia was born and raised by her mother and father in the Sultanate of Zanzibar and her father was a school teacher and her mother a housewife but their names aren’t known. She and her family are Muslims by religion.

Political Career

Hassanโ€™s political journey began within Tanzaniaโ€™s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). She entered politics as a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives and served as a minister. She was reelected in 2005 and held another ministerial portfolio.

In 2010, she became a member of Tanzaniaโ€™s National Assembly, representing the Makunduchi constituency. During her time in the National Assembly, Hassan was appointed as the minister of state for union affairs by President Jakaya Kikwete. In 2014, she was named vice chair of the Constitutional Assembly, responsible for drafting the countryโ€™s new constitution.

Hassanโ€™s political prominence grew when she became the running mate of CCM presidential candidate John Magufuli in the October 2015 election. They won, and on November 5, Hassan was inaugurated as vice president, becoming the first woman to hold that position.

In the October 2020 election, Hassan and Magufuli secured another term. Key issues during this time included Magufuliโ€™s increasingly authoritarian tendencies and his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. He faced criticism for disregarding safety measures and declaring Tanzania COVID-free while the virus continued to spread.

On March 17, 2021, following rumors of Magufuli contracting COVID-19, Hassan announced his death from heart-related complications. She was sworn in as President on March 19, completing the remainder of his term.

First Female President

As president, Hassan swiftly addressed Magufuliโ€™s COVID-19 policies, advocating for social distancing and mask-wearing. She also promoted vaccination, setting an example by publicly receiving the vaccine to build trust.

Hassan reversed some of Magufuliโ€™s restrictive policies, including lifting bans on media and allowing pregnant girls to attend school. Regionally, she worked on improving relations with East African countries.

Hassanโ€™s focus on enhancing the political climate led to the establishment of a task force on political reform and democracy, gathering input from civil society, the media, and leaders.
