Six people were held for interrogation after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids on Monday against associates of absconding criminal Dawood Ibrahim and a few hawala operators in various parts of Mumbai.

Salim Quereshi or Salim Fruit, a gangster Chhota Shakeel’s relative, was one of them arrested at his residence in Bhendi Bazaar in south Mumbai.

His police custody was extended until March 14 by the metropolitan magistrate court on Saturday after the prosecution claimed to be investigating his expansion and gathering more information on the ’93 blast suspects.

During Salim’s interrogation, the Mumbai crime branch’s anti-extortion division discovered that he had been to at least 17 to 18 countries in the previous three years, including China, Bangkok, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, and Turkestan.

Who Is Salim Qureshi?

Salim Qureshi also known as Salim Fruit, is a gangster from Mumbai. He is the brother-in-law of the gangster Chhota Shakeel, who is the henchman of Dawood Ibrahim.

His family business is selling fruits in South Mumbai. That’s why many people called him Salim Fruit. He is also regarded as a close associate of Dawood Ibrahim.

According to sources, Salim Fruit also paid three to four visits to Chhota Shakeel’s residence in Pakistan. Let me tell you that Chhota Shakeel is a gangster and contract murderer who used to manage an extortion network with his subordinates. Shakeel is said to work for Dawood Ibrahim out of Pakistan.

Other Cases Against Salim Qureshi

Salim was suspected of leading an extortion ring for Shakeel and Dawood in early 2000 and was deported to India by the UAE government in 2006. Soon later, he was arrested in an extortion case involving Shakeel and charged with others under the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA). In this instance, Salim was freed from jail in 2010.

Salim was detained again in 2016 by Mumbai Police’s anti-extortion unit (AEC) in connection with a case that dates back to 2004. Salim had demanded Rs 25 lakh from the Mumbai-based doctor while purportedly staying in Dubai at the time and calling from an international number, according to police. After the doctor filed a complaint, police apprehended two persons who were caught collecting the protection money red-handed.

During one of the court sessions in 2016, AEC investigators discovered that Salim had been to at least 17 to 18 countries in the previous three years, including Bangkok, Sri Lanka, and China. He stated, however, that he visited China on business and Bangkok as a tourist.

Who Is Chhota Shakeel?

Chhota Shakeel is a high-ranking member of the D-Company, a crime syndicate located in South Asia, and an Indian crime lord. He was born in Mumbai on December 31, 1955. Mohammed Shakeel Babu Miyan Shaikh was his birth name.

He joined the D-Company in 1988, working for mastermind Dawood Ibrahim, and is said to be in charge of the criminal organization’s day-to-day activities.

After his claimed involvement in the 1993 Bombay bombings, Shakeel became one of India’s most sought individuals. The US government is also looking for him for international narcotics trafficking. Shakeel was reported killed by numerous sources in January 2017. However, his death is still not confirmed.
