The Indian women’s football team failed to qualify for the U-20 Women’s Championship 2023 final after finishing only in third place in the standings.

Only the top two teams are set to qualify for the final of the SAFF U-20 Women’s Championships.
A shock defeat for team India
Despite being favourites to progress into the final, India suffered a shock defeat against Nepal in the final group match. The match took place at the Bir Sherestha Shaheed Shipahi Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on January 7.
Despite only needing a draw to qualify, India lost 3-1 against Nepal. Moreover, Bangladesh won their match against Bhutan, which dropped down India to third place in the points table.
SAFF U-20 Women’s Championships
The current SAFF U-20 Women’s Championships initially started as an Under-18 tournament in 2018. Following which, the second edition took place in 2021 as an Under-19 tournament. Later the next year, in 2022, it reverted back to its Under-18 format.
This year’s 2023 edition is the first time that the championship is using the Under-20 format. India won the 2022 edition, while Bangladesh won the previous two editions.
Indian women’s football squad
Before the tournament, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) named a 23-member squad for the SAFF U-20 Women’s Championship 2023. Astam Oraon was named as the captain of the team.
Most of the players in the Indian women’s football team squad was made up of under-17 players. These same players represented India at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup last year.

Format
The ongoing SAFF U-20 Women’s Championship 2023 followed a single-legged round-robin and final format. In the round-robin stage, all the four teams played against each other once. The top two teams with the highest points will now move on to play for the final round.
